KANHANGAD
Kanhangad is the name believed to be derived from the word, ‘Kanhirangad’. Historical evidence can be seen that Kerala had been divided as four territories and 64 villages for administrative conveniences. Payyannur was one among the four territories consisting of 32 villages out of which one was Kanhangad. Mythological belief about the name of Kanhangad is that the name was derived from the Kanhirangattappan, the god worshipped in the temple at Kanhirangad. During the reign of Kolathiri, his representative was a tribal landlord named Kanhan. It is also believed that Kanhangad is the land of Kanhan.. But this has no support of historical evidence. ‘Kanjanaghattam’ was the old name of Kanhangad is a matter of interest only.
Kanhangad Municipality
Kanhangad is one of the two Municipalities of Kasaragod District. It was a part of South Canara District of Madras State and was transferred to Kerala on 1st January 1957. Kasaragod District was formed by bifurcating the then Kannur District in 1984. Kanhangad had been a minor Panchayat since 1936. In 1948 the status was upgraded as major Panchayat and in 1984 as third grade Municipality.
Language
Kanhangad is a meeting place of the people speaking several languages. Besides the main language Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu, Kongini, Hindustani and Maratti languages are being handled by the people of Kanhangad.
